SSI’s Food Pantry

As food insecurity becomes a growing concern for college campuses, Rice is proud to join the efforts of campus food pantries nationwide. The Pantry operates on a good faith basis and is an anonymous resource for all students, faculty, staff, and community members. It is our goal to ensure The Pantry is a space where individuals feel welcome and that this is an accessible resource.

Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Location: The Pantry is located in Rice Memorial Center on the left of The Chapel.

Items available: Visitors will have access to non-perishable food and hygiene products. Availability of specific items may fluctuate throughout the year, but we do our best to keep our most requested and used products stocked. Please note that these items are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

SAFE Office

SAFE (Sexual Assault Free Environment) Programming aims to help foster a culture at Rice where survivors of sexual and relationship violence and all students feel supported and empowered, and works toward a day when sexual and relationship violence no longer happen on our campus or in our world. We do this by:

    • Educating the Rice community on topics such as healthy relationships, healthy sexuality, sexual and relationship violence, Rice policies and procedures, support available on and off-campus, and sexual and relationship violence prevention and risk reduction.
    • Empowering students and staff to work towards ending sexual and relationship violence by giving them the tools and skills they need to create cultural change.
    • Engaging the community in ongoing conversations that create a supportive and healthy environment for all.

The SAFE office can help queer students receive on campus housing over breaks if your home environment is not safe. This is on a case-by-case basis.

STRIVE Liaisons

*CURRENTLY ON HIATUS*

STRIVE Coalition is a dedicated group of students who have come together to address sexual and domestic violence on campus. The Coalition is made up of an executive board, STRIVE liaisons to colleges, STRIVE liaisons to graduate programs, STRIVE representatives in a variety of student groups, and volunteers. The Coalition is advised by the Office of Sexual Violence Prevention and Title IX Support.

Residential Health Advisors

Rice Health Advisors, or RHAs, are students who have been trained on a variety of wellbeing topics. These students work at their college to provide health education opportunities, health supplies and peer guidance. RHAs also act as a liaison between the Student Wellbeing Office and the residential colleges, staying up to date on campus-wide wellbeing programming. It’s important to note that while the RHAs do provide health supplies like bandaids and other first aid supplies, they are mainly here for your mental health and wellbeing. Feel free to contact them or go and talk to them if you need some guidance, need health supplies, or just want to chat! Or meet them at one of the events or study breaks they host throughout the year! Note: RHAs will direct students to the Wellness Center, Health Services or the Rice Counseling Center as appropriate.

A-Team (College Coordinators, Magisters, and Residential Advisors)

College Magisters are tenured faculty members who live, with their families, in houses adjacent to each college.  Magisters are a supportive resource for students and oversee all aspects of student life. They encourage broad cultural and intellectual pursuits, ensure the effectiveness of the college’s self-governance, and care for their students’ wellbeing. College Magisters serve as advisors and confidants; promote responsible student government; encourage student-faculty interaction in the college through cultural and educational programs, social events, and other activities; and help students understand the university’s broad curriculum and vast experiential learning opportunities.

College coordinators are staff members who serve as daytime contacts for students within their assigned college. They typically keep a 9-5 schedule and their duties include managing the college’s office budget, notifying students of important deadlines, sorting the mail, and acting as the primary contact between the residential colleges and other university offices. The college coordinator’s office is the nerve center of the college, the main meeting place where students stop by to chat and get answers to questions on everything from how to pay a parking ticket, replace a room key or when to meet important deadlines.

The Resident Associate (RA) is crucial to the Rice University college system, assisting magisters in supporting the intellectual, social, and cultural activities within the college.  Living among the students, [they are] in a unique position to be a positive community facilitator, role model, and to provide guidance and leadership to college members. The RA, therefore, must be a visible participant in college life, accessible to students, and willing to stand in for the magisters, when appropriate.

Wellbeing and Counseling Center

The Wellbeing and Counseling Center supports student development and success by providing a good first point of contact for students who want to talk to someone about solutions to their wellbeing and mental health concerns.
